![]() ![]() ![]() Turns out I have a bit of a knack for it and now speedrun a few shmups just to give myself an extra challenge of reducing slowdown as much as possible. I don't know for sure which was my first, but it very may well have been Gradius 3 for SNES, and it's definitely one of my favorites (can't say for sure what takes the top spot.) I definitely wasn't the best at the genre as a kid and ending up burning myself out of score runs but a few years ago I decided to pick it back up starting with Gradius 3 trying things that I knew would be better (E Laser) if I could use them. Perhaps if titles like R-Type Final 2 sales are strong it might happen? I adore Gradius 5 on PS2 and would of course welcome more mainline entries in the series. When I revisit this game, I play SNES because I Need that slowdown and still die lol. Without the slowdown, the arcade version of 3 kicked my butt and had extra baddies like those sand lion guys oh my! Squadron were even more innovative with bringing good experiences to console.īeing that I was obsessed with Gradius, teenage years saw me buying an import of the PS2 ports for 3 & 4. I would later discover that other ports like U.N. Mechanically this early SNES port taught me the value of player choice that I still search for today in modern shmups and games in general. Ship and weapon customization are you kidding me? So cool, and paired with that signature power up bar system, I could play over and over again trying different builds. That thumping soundtrack driving you forward toward the next boss fight that could end you in a microsecond. The "epic slowdown" when the screen filled up with bubbles -) ![]() The lone pilot on an endless space adventure, completely outnumbered. My kid brain exploded into imagination when Gradius 3 got going. What shmup hooked you, and never let you go? It felt incredible and I've been seeking out good shmups ever since. Konami's US port of Gradius 3 for SNES was made for me.Īt least that's how my ten year old brain felt playing it for the first time. ![]()
